Simple Things You can do that will make a difference in your home.

Turn Thermostat down by 1 degree (if appropriate)

 

Reflector Foil behind radiators

 

Lower boiler flow temp to 60C 

(not if poorly insulated house, only/ combi/condensing) reduces energy use by around 8%, increases efficiency of boiler by making sure it runs in condensing mode so it recovers waste heat.

 

Draught Proofing

windows, doors, letterbox, service entry points, floorboards.

 

Insulate hot water cylinder and at least first meter of pipe

(since 2002 must be pre-insulated)

 

Replace all light bulbs with LED

The Center for Sustainable energy has a great selection if advice on reducing energy bills.

Reading Draught Busters

Our friends at Reading Draft Busters are experts in helping their community run their homes more efficiently.

Their Website has all the information you need to draft proof your home, tackle mold problems and install upgrades that will reduce your energy bills. 

 

They even have a YouTube Channel with how to guides.

Our heat volunteers are here to help you find ways to lower your energy bills and reduce your carbon impact.

 

We can provide you with a free of charge infrared home survey to identify how your home could be made more energy efficient. 

We will look at how you can improve your homes insulation, windows, draught proofing, ventilation and more 

The visit lasts about an hour and we discuss:

  • Energy loss through the walls, roof, windows and floor
  • Efficiency of your oil boiler
  • Heating and hot water appliances and controls
  • Lighting
  • Damp, condensation and draughts

The NNC also have a range of grants available for homeowners who are on low incomes and need help with home upgrades or fuel bills

small energy works in the home - radiator foils, draught exclusion to doors and windows, energy power downs, LED light bulbs.

be in receipt of means tested benefits
or

have a household income of £31,000 or less
or

be in receipt of a disability benefit
